Desolation Canyon - 6 or 7 Day / Western River Expeditions

Desolation Canyon - 6 or 7 Day / Western River Expeditions The Green River is one of the West's great, but lesser known rivers. It rushes along the Utah-Colorado border, cutting canyons as deep and magnificent as the Grand Canyon. Major Powell must have been having a bad day when he named the canyons of the Green River "Desolation" and "Gray." They're anything but. Tamarisk and willow-fringed beaches for comfortable camping give way to lofty red rock walls. And through it all runs the river where outlaws Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid dodged the posse.

Settle in at the Sorrel River Ranch Resort for two days of luxury ranch life before your Green River rafting trip. Sorrel is the only resort ranch on the Colorado River in Utah. Unbelievable beauty among red rock buttes, guests may enjoy swimming in the resort pool, exercising in the fully equipped gym, reading a book on your covered balcony, hiking, going on a trail ride, or dining at the River Grill Restaurant.

Just minutes from Arches National Park in Moab, Utah, Sorrel River Ranch stands akin to the rare and historic haciendas that have bridged the West's dry canyons with luscious fields of alfalfa, an oasis within the red walls and spirey buttes. Surrounded by BLM land, with Arches National Park only a ridge-top away and the Colorado River bordering the backyard, the beauty and adventure of the southwest are close at hand.

 Trip Itinerary

A typical trip itinerary is laid out below:

Day 1 & 2 - Relaxing at Sorrel River Ranch

Day 3 - You launch onto a calm stretch of the Green River where the rafts will float together for an orientation and introduction of guests and guides. There will be time before your first gourmet camp dinner for relaxing for a game of volleyball.

Day 4 - After a night under the stars, you'll awaken to the shout of "coffee," signaling time for a hearty breakfast and the start of a great day of rafting. There also will be a great hike to Fremont petroglyphs or other historic sites. Rapids develop after lunch, to be challenged in oar-powered rafts , as well as inflatable kayaks.

Day 5 - Day three brings on rougher water and short hikes to old homesteads and ranches. Steer Ridge and Three Fords rapids, among the biggest on the Green, are encountered in the afternoon and mark the separation of Desolation and Gray Canyons, traversing 40 million years of geologic history in the process.

Day 6 - Day four brings on several rapids and stretches of calm water for swim breaks and water fights.

Later in the season as the water slows its pace, the trip extends into a seventh day.
