The Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area, created as a recreational destination, contains nearly half of the Byway. There you can hike, river-raft, swim, canoe, camp, bike, and much more. Outside the recreation area there is still plenty to do, like exploriing ancient natural history in the fossil-rich lands around you, and particularly at the Dinosaur National Monument and Quarry, one of the world's greatest sources for dinosaur skeletons. Or experience the essence of the "real West" by hunting for world-class rock art or listening to the western folklore of early explorers, mountain men, outlaws, and cowboys.
