 Newspaper Rock features a 200 square foot area of extremely dense Native American petroglyphs on a "desert varnished" cliff wall. The petroglyphs were created by several ancient cultures beginning some 1,500 years ago. The drawings consist of animals, human figures and many inexplicable symbols -- a six-toed foot? Newspaper Rock is located on Hwy 211, 25 miles before the entrance to the Needles District of Canyonlands National Park. It is 28 miles northwest of Monticello and 53 miles south of Moab.
