San Rafael Swell - Hiking

Oasis in the Desert
Oasis in the Desert

The expansive San Rafael has many great areas to explore either on daytrips or overnighters. Described below are some of the better areas to consider.

Select Hiking Guides & Outfitters for a list of companies that lead trips and/or rent equipment in the San Rafael Swell area.

Little Wild Horse Canyon Intermediate
8.6 miles (loop) 5 hours
This dry, desert canyon hike follows the bottoms of two narrow slot canyons as they cut their way through the southeastern side of the San Rafael Reef.

Lower Black Box of the San Rafael Difficult
16.3 miles (round trip) 3 days
The Lower Black Box is a deep, narrow canyon of the San Rafael River located on the eastern edge of the San Rafael Swell. This hike involves floating 3.7 miles down the river through the Lower Black Box, and then walking back 2.6 miles along the eastern side of the gorge to the starting point. The trip is an exciting one with a lot to see, but it requires careful planning and it isn’t suitable for everyone.
