Description

Imagine yourself looking across the powerful Colorado River toward a red sandstone wall rising a mile to the azure sky. Through the canyon cut by millions of years of weather and water, the river curls and plunges into deep holes, filling the air with its pounding roar. It's an awesome moment, just one of many that create a spellbinding adventure on the West's mightiest river. It is born a trickle high in the Rocky Mountains, and by the time the Colorado River reaches the Utah/Colorado border, it has developed its unique personality. On its way to the Gulf of California, the Colorado River cuts through the most amazing natural beauty in America, including the Grand Canyon -- an American national park known throughout the world. This is a highly regulated area and only 150 people each day are permitted to launch trips from Lee's Ferry.

But the Grand Canyon is only one of the beautiful gorges carved in the Colorado Plateau by the winding river. Lesser known but equally astounding in their magnitude are Cataract Canyon and Westwater Canyon. Western River Expeditions launches trips through all these areas.

Additional Details:
With names like Skull Rapid and Sock-It-To-Me Rapid, it's no wonder Westwater Canyon has earned a reputation as a tough ride, and is known to some as Hades Canyon! Narrow rapids run through deep canyons enclosed by black gneiss and granite and cliffs of red and gold sandstone. The beauty of Westwater is punctuated by the challenge of running one of the most popular whitewater stretches of the Colorado River. Sandy beaches fringed by pinion pine provide wonderful settings for overnight campsites, and are trailheads for easy hikes to canyon overlooks. The rapids are exciting, indeed, but some say the real thrill of this trip is the magnificent scenery. Sharing a border with Arches National Park as the trip enters its last lap, fabulous Fisher Towers stand at attention before a backdrop of the snowcapped LaSal Mountains. No wonder this has become the icon for the great Wild West.
