The instructions that came with my bottle and filter specifically warn against removing the clear plastic plug on the bottom of the filter.It also states that water flow may be slow during the first use and that the bottle must be squeezed when drinking (unlike typical cycling water bottles).

I love the filter. The only comment I have is there were no instructions with the unit. The first time I used them it didn't produce water very fast. After inspecting the unit I found a clear plastic plug that inhibited the flow. I removed it and now the filter works very quickly.
