Slalom: Best combined time on two courses of 45-75
tightly spaced gates. This is the slowest and most controlled alpine
event, and no practice runs allowed.
Giant Slalom: Uses a higher longer course than slalom, and
increases gate separation. Speed increases but the basic rules are
the same as slalom.
Super-G: Short for super giant slalom, focuses more on speed
and less on maneuverability. There are fewer gates and a larger course
than giant slalom. Skiers get only one run down, and the best time
wins..
Downhill: The biggest, fastest and steepest of the alpine events.
Speeds of more than 75mph (125kph) are reached on a course with very
few gates and lined with safety fencing. After required practice,
only one run down the mountain determines the winner.
Combined: Runs on both the downhill course and the slalom course
make up the Combined Event. |
