There are good scenic hiking opportunities in the forested highlands surrounding the southern portion of Flaming Gorge, as well as in the Uinta Mountains just southeast of the gorge. Your options are described below.

Little Hole Trail

The Little Hole National Recreation Trail is an very pleasant path along the Green River below the dam. It is mostly flat and offers nice views of the river as it runs past canyon walls and forested banks. Most hikers follow it for just a few miles before turning around. The main trail ends at Little Hole, the take-out point for rafters, but you can continue to follow a trail another 2 miles.
Canyon Rim Trail

The Canyon Rim Trail starts at the Red Canyon Visitor Center and follows the edge of the canyon for 1-1/2 miles before turning away through ponderosa and aspen forest. It ends at the Greendale Rest Area off Hwy 44. The views of the gorge along its first mile are spectacular. At mile 2, a side trail swings by Green Lake and later rejoins the trail.
Bear Canyon Bootleg

Bear Canyon Bootleg Trail is a dirt road used more as a bike path. It runs through open forest and meadows to an overview of the gorge.
Dowd Mountain Hideout

The Dowd Mountain Hideout Trail begins at the superb Dowd Mountain Lookout and descends almost 1,700' to the Flaming Gorge Lake at Hideout Boat Campground. The trail offers great views of the gorge as it winds through nicely forested terrain.

Browne Lake Trailhead
Moderate
Numerous trails start from Browne Lake, a short distance from Flaming Gorge. The short Ute Mountain Trail leads 2 miles to the historic Ute Mountain Fire Lookout Tower. Hacking Lake Trail heads south 7 miles to hacking Lake near the Leidy Peak trailhead. Leidy Peak trail travels 5 miles to Tee Pee Lakes and then another 8 miles to Leidy Peak.
Spirit Lake

Tamarack Lake - Fish Lake Trail runs west from the Spirit Lake trailhead (at Spirit Lake Lodge) past Tamarack Lake (1-1/2 miles) and to Fish Lake (5 miles). The trail past Fish Lake is harder to follow, but it joins Island Lake trail and continues to large Island Lake (8-1/2 miles) and then on to the Highline Trail (12 miles). Daggett Lake Trail heads east from Spirit Lake 2-1/2 miles to Daggett Lake and its numerous campsities.
