Smooth, bulbous, oddly-shaped, free-form rock formations are the lure of small Goblin Valley State Park. Small holes in some of the formations make them look like petrified goblins, hence the park's name. The larger your imagination, the more you'll enjoy this park. An interest in artistic photography wouldn't hurt either.

Goblin Valley State Park is located off Hwy. 24 in south central Utah. It is 45 miles northeast of Capitol Reef National Park and 26 miles south of I-70. Signs on Hwy 24 direct you to a paved road that travels west 5 miles and then 7 miles south on a gravel road to the park. To plan your route, select Utah Map or Central Utah Map.

Exploring the Park

This relatively small park (5 square miles) can easily be explored in a few hours. You can simply wander among the goblins or hike one of the two maintained trails.

The easy Carmel Canyon Trail loops 1-1/2 miles through the goblins. The easy Curtis Bench Trail (3 mile roundtrip) begins from the road between the parking lot and the campground and winds through the formations to a viewpoint of the distant Henry Mountains.

Overlooking the largest concentration of goblins is a covered picnic area.

Camping and campground information

An unattractive campground is set at the base of some barren hills away from the formations. It is essentially a dirt parking area with little cover. 21 sites; drinking water; modern restrooms w/ showers; dump station; elev. 5,200 feet; open year round; reservations: 800-322-3770; $11.
