The rugged desert landscape of the southern and eastern portions of Utah (orange area on maps) contains thousands of miles of scenic and challenging 4wd routes that bump and grind through exceedingly remote and unspoiled red rock desert canyons. Areas in the southeast around Moab offer the best selection of routes, though good options are available in the southwestern and central Utah as well.

Destinations to consider are grouped by region below. Select any destination that interests you for complete information on routes, outfitters, publications, etc.
NORTHERN UTAH - Coverage to be added

CENTRAL UTAH
Central Utah includes thw Wasatch Plateau, San Rafael Swell, Fish Lake, Tusha Mountains and more...The San Rafael Swell is a terrifically wild and infrequently visited area of desert canyons. It has lots of pristine backcountry for the adventurous.

The Wasatch Plateau is a large area of forested peaks, rolling hills, meadows and small alpine lakes. A fair number of forest service roads suitable for 4wd vehicles provide access to remote areas.
SOUTHEASTERN UTAH
Southeast Utah includes Arches, Canyonlands, Moab, Colorado River Monument Valley and more...Canyonlands National Park is a spectacularly wild area of immense orange-red canyons and superlative red rock formations in the desert of the Colorado Plateau. The park is made up of three distinct districts, each of which offers terrific 4wd opportunities. The White Rim Road through the Island in the Sky District of the park and Elephant Hill in the Needles District are world renowned. The isolated and pristine Maze District is accessible only by 4wd vehicle and includes the tortuously steep Flint Trail.

Moab -- There are dozens of good 4wd routes through the red rock desert landscape surrounding Moab. Opportunities are available for beginners and experienced drivers alike. (Canyonlands is also nearby.) Numerous outfitters in Moab rent vehicles and lead guided tours. Some outfitters combine 4wd trips with hiking, mountain biking and/or white water rafting trips.

SOUTHWESTERN UTAH
Southwest Utah includes Bryce Canyon, Zion, Capitol Reef, Lake Powell, St. George and more...Capitol Reef National Park is made up of a 100 mile long ridge of rock that was forced up out of the earth millions of years ago. Erosion has created marvelously-colored and wildly-varied rock formations of great beauty out of the ridge. The Cathedral Valley area in the northern portion of Capitol Reef contains many miles of 4wd routes among good red rock desert scenery.
