Provo
is Utah's second largest city with about 105,000 people. It is a clean,
pleasant city beautifully situated between the Wasatch Mountains and 250-square
mile Utah Lake. Provo's main claim to fame is Brigham Young University,
a 30,000 student university founded and run as the leading Mormon institution
of higher learning. It is the largest church affiliated university in
the country and its cultural offerings and sports programs play an integral
role in Provo.
The mountains surrounding Provo provide good
hiking, mountain biking and fishing opportunities among beautiful alpine
scenery. In winter there is downhill and cross-country skiing at Sundance
Ski Resort, owned by Robert Redford. Also near town is the Mt. Timpanogos
Cave National Monument and Bridal Veil Falls.
Provo is located in the middle of the state, just off I-15, about 45 miles south of Salt Lake City. It is one of several cities that form a sprawling urban area along the western base of the Wasatch Mountains (the "Wasatch Front").
