Music

The Concert Series at Temple Square offers a wide variety of music -- symphonies, piano solos, organ works, operatic selections, etc. All concerts are free and take place at either Assembly Hall or the Mormon Tabernacle on Friday and Saturday evenings from 7:30 - 8:30. Call for specific offerings. 800-537-9703.

The Mormon Tabernacle Choir performs for its radio broadcast in the Tabernacle every Sunday morning from 9:30 to 10:00. The public is welcome for free, but must be seated by 9:15. Children 8 years and younger are not allowed, however a quite room is available. The public is also invited to rehearsals on Thursday evenings, 8:00 - 9:30, and may come and go throughout the duration.

The well regarded Utah Symphony performs at the Maurice Abravanel Hall. A wide variety of works are performed throughout the year 123 W. South Temple; 801-533-5626.

The Utah Opera Company presents four operas from October to May in the Capitol Theater at 50 W. 200 South. 801-355-2787.

The University of Utah has a Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, and various opera, ballet, dance, jazz and choral groups that present shows during the school year. The university is located just east of downtown. 801-581-6773.

     
There are great Summer Concert Series at various venues.

 
 
Red Butte Gardens Arboretum features some excellent concerts outdoors on Sundays at 6:30 throughout the summer -- Richard Thompson, Buckwheat Zydeco, Hal Kectchum, and more. Bring a blanket, some eats and drink.Wakara Way east of the University of Utah Research Park. 801-581-4747.
     
 
The Salt Lake City Arts Council sponsors a Twilight Concert Series at the Gallivan Utah Center on Thursdays at 7:30 throughout the summer. Blues, jazz, bluegrass, etc. 801-532-0459.
     

There are also numerous venues in town that offer rock, country, jazz, and folk on a regular basis. They are listed in Nightlife. You can pick up one of the papers identified above for specific week-to-week information. You might also want to check out the offerings in Park City-Special Events.

Theater

Hale Center Theater presents family oriented comedies and musicals Mon.-Sat., with matinees on most Saturdays. April Ann runs Aug. 14 to Sep. 18.; Blithe Spirit runs Sept. 25 to Oct. 30; Forever Plaid runs Nov. 6 to Nov. 20; A Christmas Carol runs Nov. 30 to Dec. 23. Reservations required. 2801 S. The Pioneer Theatre puts on a variety of popular productions. A Funny Thing Happned on the Way to the Forum runs Sept. 15 to Oct. 2; As You Like It runs Oct. 27 to Nov. 13; Picasso at the Lapin Agile runs Dec. 1 to Dec. 18. 300 S. 1340 East; 801-581-6961.

Off-Broadway Theater presents improv and comedies in a casual setting. Star Spangled Girl runs July 15 to August 21. 272 S. Main; 801-355-4628.

The University of Utah puts on various productions during the school year. 801-581-6961.

The Promised Valley Playhouse, a showplace from the turn of the century owned by the Mormon Church, has been closed for structural repair. The Mormon Church is building a new theater as part of a new assembly hall north of Temple Square. The Promised Valley Playhouse Company will not put on any more productions until further notice.

Dance

Ballet West performs classical, modern and foreign works September through April. 801-355-2787.

The Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company presents a more modern repertoire. 801-328-1062.

The Repertory Dance Theater focuses on classical American and modern dance. 801-534-1000.

All three perform at the Capitol Theater at 50 W. 200 South.

Sport Teams

The Utah Jazz play at the Delta Center, 301 W. South Temple. Tickets can be hard to come by though. 801-355-DUNK.

   
The Utah Starzz are the WNBA franchise in Salt Lake. They play at the Delta Center. 801-355-DUNK.

The Salt Lake Buzz , a Triple A minor league baseball team, plays at pretty Franklin Covey Field at 1301 S. West Temple. 801-484-9901 or 9900.

   
The Utah Grizzlies are a popular IHL pro hockey team. They play at the E-Center from October to April. 801-988-8035.
   

The University of Utah also fields teams (the "Utes") in all major sports. Their men's basketball team made it to the finals of the NCAA tournament in 1998. 801-581-8849.
