Description

Yampa River Specialists
The Yampa River travels through northwestern Colorado, before joining the Green River just a few miles east of the Utah border. It is the only major tributary of the Colorado that is still flowing freely unhindered by dams. Due to its relative isolation in an under-traveled part of the state, river rafters can find a peace and solitude lacking on more crowded raft trips in popular areas.

Raft trips float the river through Dinosaur National Monument, passing by mighty sandstone formations such as Tiger Wall and preserved Native American dwellings and rock art. Boaters will often be distracted from the scenery, however, by thrilling whitewater passages, among which are the infamous Warm Springs Rapids. Most of the river, however, is made up of long, slow segments that allow rafters time to appreciate the beautiful scenery.

A typical trip on the Yampa lasts 4 days, beginning from Deerlodge Park at the east end of Dinosaur National Monument. Trips end either just after the Yampa joins the Green, or continue farther down the Green into northeast Utah.
