The Desert Voices Loop Trail begins opposite the entrance to Split Mountain Campground and makes a loop through lower portions of the Split Mountains. It has trail signs made by kids for kids.
Desolation Lake is a popular destination for mountain bikers, so you are bound to see a few of them on this hike. But don't expect all of them to be riding-there is a 2,000-foot elevation gain from the trailhead to the lake, and riding a bike uphill is much harder than walking.
If the strange and wonderful rock formations of southern Utah interest you, you will love this hike. Devils Garden contains eight of the best known sandstone arches in Arches National Park, including Landscape Arch, the park's longest span.
Devils Pocket Trail passes through some of the best spires in the park, through the flat grassy bottomed valleys ("grabens") of Devil's Pocket and finishes along the northern edge of Chesler Park. It is a wonderfully scenic route and not much used.
The prettiest part of the Dog Lake loop is probably the first two miles of the hike, along Butler Fork. Butler Fork meanders northward through a narrow canyon filled with dense groves of quaking aspen, eventually emerging into a more open forest of Engelmann spruce and Douglas fir along the ridge above Mill Creek Canyon.
Double Arch is an impressive pair of connected arches -- one 144 feet wide and 112 feet tall, the other 61 by 86 feet. An easy trail through loose sand takes you to its base.
The trail that leads to Landscape Arch continues another 1.3 miles to Double O Arch. It has two oval shaped openings, 45 by 71 feet and 9 by 21 feet. Along the trail to Double O Arch are several smaller arches.
The Dowd Mountain Hideout Trail begins at the superb Dowd Mountain Lookout and descends almost 1,700' to the Flaming Gorge Lake at Hideout Boat Campground. The trail offers great views of the gorge as it winds through nicely forested terrain.
