Logan - Hiking

Elegance & Provincial Charm
Elegance & Provincial Charm

There are a great number of great hikes available near Logan. Most of your options are in Logan Canyon off Hwy 89 and in the adjacent Mt. Naomi Wilderness. The Wellsville Mountains west of Logan also offer some (challenging) options.

Crimson Trail Intermediate
2 mile oneway 1-1/2 hours
Crimson Trail climbs steeply up limestone cliffs to good views of the canyon. The trail begins at Guivanah-Malibu Campground and ends at Spring Hollow Campground. You can make it a loop by returning 1.5 miles along the Riverside Trail (#1).

Deep Canyon to Stewart Pass Difficult
4.5 mile oneway 4-1/2 hours
This trail starts easily through maple and aspen before switchbacking steeply up to the range's ridge (8,120'). The trail follows the ridge south 1.6 miles to Stewart Pass (8,375') and meets Maple Bench Trail. The trailhead is at the western end of 300 North in the town of Mendon.

Jardine Juniper Intermediate
8.8 mile roundtrip 4 hours
The juniper in question is a gnarled, tenacious, three thousand year old tree. The trail climbs to it through forests with nice views of the Bear River Range. The trailhead is at the turn-off to Wood Camp, 10 miles up canyon.

Maple Bench Difficult
7.5 mile roundtrip 6 hours
The trail passes small Coldwater Lake before climbing steeply up switchbacks to Stewart Pass. The trail turns south and follows the narrow ridge 1.5 miles to Wellsville Cone (9,350'). You can keep going another .4 miles to Box Elder Peak (9,375'), the highest point in the range.

Naomi Peak Difficult
6.4 miles round trip 4 1/2 hours
This trail takes you to the top of the highest peak in the Bear River Mountains (9,980'). It provides outstanding views over the range and Cache Valley. Wildflowers adorn the route in July and August. The trailhead is at Tony Grove Lake.

Old Ephraim's Grave Intermediate
10.8 mile roundtrip 4-1/2 hours
Old Ephraim was the last known grizzly bear in Utah. A stone marks the spot where the huge bear was killed in 1928. The trail wends through open meadows and forested sections to the site. The trailhead is at Lodge Campground.

River Trail / Riverside Nature Trail Easy
4.2 mile oneway 2 hours
the River Trail runs along the Logan River from the mouth of the canyon up to Spring Hollow Campground. The trail is never too far from Hwy. 89, but it is mostly shielded by heavy plant growth.

Wellsville Ridge Intermediate
7.5 miles (plus 6.5 miles by car or bicycle) 5 3/4 hours
This peak is supposed to be an especially fine place to watch the hawks, but in fact if the conditions are right they can be seen almost everywhere along the ridge.

Wind Cave Intermediate
2.6 mile roundtrip 1-3/4 hours
This trail climbs through mountain maple to the eroded caverns of Wind Cave. The trailhead is 5.3 miles up canyon across the highway from the Guinavah-Malibu Campground.
