The Mojave Desert/Joshua Tree Scenic Backway starts in desert terrain populated with Joshua trees in the northern reach of the Mojave Desert. It travels north through hilly desert landscapes along the Beaver Mountain Range to its end in Shivwits, about 13 miles west of St. George. Beautiful wildflowers add to the scenery in summer.

This route provides some excellent scenery and some nice overlooks, but it is not for those who are afraid of heights. There is a section with 1100 foot drop-offs and a 10% grade. (Vehicles over 10,000 lbs are prohibited.)

Near Monument Valley, this area has been the setting for countless western movies. The road moves through the vast Navajo Indian Reservation. There are also several red rock formations easily accessible from the road.

This scenic and varied road is well maintained. There are some very fine petroglyphs and a set of dinosaur tracks along this road.

The road ascends through the Grand Staircase of vermillion, white and pink cliffs and provides access to Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park, providing scenic views of Zion National Park and the green fields and orchards of Long Valley.

This byway allows you to see not only that tallest of Wasatch Mountains, Mount Nebo, but long stretches of Uinta National Forest.

The Needles and Anticline Overlooks provide fantastic views of the canyon country in and near Canyonlands National Park. A marked gravel road off Hwy 191 about 32 miles south of Moab leads to both. Though the drive itself isn't exceptional, the overlooks are.

The North Slope Road is a beautiful drive along the northern edge of the Uinta Mountains. The greens of the forest and meadows and the blues of the sky are vibrant here, and the occasional views of majestic peaks framed by the forest are very satisfying.
